Superworms, Giant Mealworms or King Mealworms : Zophobas morio
Call them what you like, but Superworms, Zophobas morio are a member of the Darkling Beetle family – a huge beetle family that includes its distant relative the mealworm. They are native to South America. They are BIG, easy to care for and readily eaten by a wide range of animals.
They are generally of similar composition to a mealworm (see our nutrition guides.) but some people prefer them on the basis that by being bigger they have more “meat” and less “shell”. They do have a tougher, thicker exoskeleton so this may negate some of the benefit gained by the bigger size.

Keep your superworms in a mix of bran and other dry food. Your choice of dry food may be dependant on what nutrients you want them to increase before feeding out. Suitable foods include chicken crumble or cat and dog foods. Make sure to give the fresh fruit and vegetables, they need these to get water. Suitable veggies include carrot, potato, apple and banana.
Keep them in a mild area (20-25°C) and well ventilated so as not to create excessive humidity.
PLEASE – DO NOT REFRIGERATE superworms, they are a tropical species and will be killed by cold temperatures.
