House Fly Larvae, Maggots or Gents : Musca domestica

house-fly-larvae

$16.00

These are housefly maggots grown on the ARC’s special formulation of grains and dairy making them very high in calcium. Excellent for insectivorous birds, fish, small reptiles and amphibians. The major advantage they offer is their high calcium and low phosphorus levels. That’s why maggot species are sold worldwide for animal food under such labels as Phoenix worms, Calciworms, Reptiworms and Soldier grubs.

These Gents have more than 10 times the calcium of Crickets and over 40 times the calcium of Mealworms. They are typically around 65% protein and 22% fat. You also get two hits at using them for food – any that are not eaten will pupate and emerge after a few days as House Fly that will be excitedly pursued and eaten by many pets. Please keep your enclosures well sealed, these are much cleverer and smaller than Blowfly and will escape easily through small cracks. You can learn much more about food choices in our nutrition guides.

For more details about ordering, postage charges and delivery times, or advice, please read our guide to ordering insects.

Keep them in a flat tray with good straight walls (like a kitty litter tray). They will last up to two weeks in the fridge – but depending on your partner or family, you may not last that long….. If you need help, you can assure family members that these Gents have been raised only on our specially developed mix of grain and dairy and all of it human food grade. Once refrigerated, they will not need food. They will usually clump together when cold making them easy to separate – or put them out in the light and they will burrow to the bottom then you can scrape away the surface revealing a juicy layer of clean maggots at the bottom.

Keep them in a cold area (10-15°C if available). If they are kept warmer they will pupate and hatch more quickly – so you can still use them.
