Mealworms : Tenebrio molitor
$17.00
We don’t use Mealworms ourselves. We do recognise that many people like them and they have their uses – but to be honest we don’t think they have any values not better represented in other insects. We hope that canning our own product will give us honesty points as we are here to help not just frogs but you and your pets. That said, the biggest attraction to mealworms is their price and their ease of care. You can simply put them in the fridge in some bran and leave them for weeks. While they will still be alive when you use them, they are unlikely to be very nutritious under such circumstances.
They are typically around 50% protein and 40% fat but have a horrible Ca:P ratio of around 1:20 (our Gents are 2:1 – 40 times better!). If you can handle the eek factor Gents are also cheaper, and can be purchased frozen and used over time. You can learn much more about food choices in our nutrition guides.
For more details about ordering, postage charges and delivery times, or advice, please read our guide to ordering insects.
You can give them some bran and put them in the fridge – BUT we don't recommend it. If you really must use mealworms keep them at room temperature and feed them a variety of dry food and veggies, greens and other colours. At least them when you use them they will have improved nutritional value.
Keep them in a mild area (15-25°C) and well ventilated so as not to create excessive humidity. They can be fed any vegetables and fruits as well as some dry foods like grains, chicken, dog or cat pellets.
