Ways around the amphibian egg/embryo block
• Amphibians have been cloned since the
1950s
(long
before “Dolly” in 1997)
• This is done most efficiently using
cells
from
early embryos
• It is likely that single embryonic cells can
be
cryopreserved
• Clones may be generated using eggs from
one
species,
and embryonic cells from another,
so,
in theory species can be “resurrected”
• This does need to be an area of some serious
research
