Uses of a Sperm Bank without Eggs/Embryos
• sperm storage for multiple generations –
“top up” genetic diversity of zoo/wild populations
• insurance against catastrophic events
(extinction)
• extreme case – recovery of species by androgenesis
ie generation of embryos from sperm
(no genetic material from egg)
- potentially sperm from one species can generate
embryos in the egg of another species
