| Post subject: Dart frogs & African Dwarf frogs...?? |
|
Hi there,
Can anyone tell me whether or not you're allowed to keep any breed of Dart frogs or African Dwarf frogs in Victoria, Australia? And if so, any reputable breeders?
I've been checking out the "Department of Sustainability and Environment" website and apparently Dendrobates tinctorius & African Clawed Frogs are out (unless I have approval from the Minister ... which isn't likely!)
Thanks so much!

Hayrik,
Without being official, I think you'd have great difficulty obtaining and keeping these frogs in Australia.
Very few frogs have been imported into Australia over the past 10 years and only to large research institutions or zoos. Some scientists believe that the chytrid fungus (which has sent several species of Australian frogs extinct) came from one of these introduced frogs.
It may be possible to get a licence to keep these frogs if they were already in the country but I would suspect not, particularly if it was simply as a private collector.
Australians simply don't keep exotic species in the same way that collectors in the USA and others places do. At frogs.org.au, we encourage frog-keeping for education and conservation and an appreciation of your local frogs.
Check with the Department of Sustainability and Environment for an official response. If your question can't be definitively answered on their website (very likely), give them a call. |

I agree, it would be highly doubtful you could obtain a Poison Dart frog in Australia seeing as most species are native to southern Surinam, near the border of Brazil in South America, tropical rain forests of Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama and in the Colombian region of South America. Not only being a difficult frog to care for these frogs would have a specified diet compared to ours although it is known that dart frogs can eat fruit flies and newborn crickets making it easier on your feeding time. I would love to own these frogs myself but unfortunately it is rather illegal for private collectors to import these frogs due to the chytrid fungus stated by Dave Black. I beleive when I'm older i will move to Holland for these frogs are distrubuted in pet shops, by private collectors and even on the market if you beleive it. I'm sorry to inform you that these frogs are unable to be kept in Australia for they are a beautiful frog. You guys in victoria have an array of native beautiful frogs such as the Litoria littlejohni, Mixophyes balbus, Paracrinia haswelli and the adorable spotted tree frog Litoria spenceri. To be honest i wish i was lucky enough to have Mixophyes around my area Good luck in the future with your frogs. |
