Litoria splendida size & sexing...

Postby debaig » Tue Nov 21, 2006 4:05 pm

Hi all...

I have 3 lovely Litoria splendida I have had them for around 2 months now...they seem healthy & happy. I am yet to hear one of them croak, They are about 6-7cm's when I purchased them I was told they are sub- adult....could anyone help with the sexing....I am pretty sure the enclosure conditions are right right down to waterfall with sprinkler system to simulate rain every few days.

I look forward to your replies....

check for nuptial pads on the hands and for a darker coloured throat, these indicate the frog is male.

This may sound very amatuerish but are nuptual pads the suction cap looking pads? They are on each frog but not darker in colour.

Thanks heaps for all the help....

No, nuptial pads are black pads the grow on the hands of male frogs so they can grasp females.

Nuptial pad colourationis found from around the base of the thumb and runs up the thumb a little.
You really can't miss them if the conditions are right and they are mature enough.

Mine are 6-7cm, and one is calling (I have 4). I am assuming the rest are female. Is there any size difference between the three frogs, as the males are quite a bit smaller.

They are around the same size....one is a little larger....maybe the conditions are not quite right....they seem happy enough though....hmmm....what else to do??

If the humidity is high, and the temp is nice and warm, the conditions are right for calling. Doesn't mean they are right for amplexus, but males are always rearing to go! :D
